# Connect Claude Code to FreshlyCited MCP

Claude Code connects to remote MCP servers over HTTP. FreshlyCited supports both ways Claude Code can sign in: OAuth (recommended) and an API key header.

## Add the server (OAuth)

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http freshlycited https://freshlycited.com/mcp
```

Start Claude Code, type `/mcp`, pick **freshlycited** and choose to authenticate. Your browser opens the FreshlyCited consent screen: sign in, choose the workspace and the access level (full or read-only), and allow. Claude Code stores and refreshes the token for you.

## Add the server with an API key

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http freshlycited https://freshlycited.com/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer ipk_YOUR_KEY"
```

API keys are created under **API keys** in the FreshlyCited app and shown once. A key only sees its own workspace and the clients under it, with the key's role.

## Choose the scope

- `--scope local` (default): only you, only this project.
- `--scope project`: written to `.mcp.json` in the repository so your team gets it too. Use OAuth here, or reference an environment variable; never commit a key.
- `--scope user`: available in all your projects.

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user freshlycited https://freshlycited.com/mcp
```

## Check it works

Ask: *"Call FreshlyCited's get_started tool."* You should see your workspace, role and credit balance. If the client says it can't connect, see [Authentication](https://freshlycited.com/docs/authentication) for what each error means.

Tip: paste the [AGENTS.md snippet](https://freshlycited.com/docs/agents-md) into your repository so Claude Code checks and pushes new pages after it ships them.
