Connect Windsurf to FreshlyCited MCP

Windsurf (now part of Devin Desktop) reads remote MCP servers from its mcp_config.json. Open Windsurf's MCP settings to find and edit the file, then add:

Get an API keyFree plan: 10 free links to try (once you verify your email), then 100 free checks a month, no card.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "freshlycited": {
      "serverUrl": "https://freshlycited.com/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:FRESHLYCITED_API_KEY}"
      }
    }
  }
}

Set the variable before starting Windsurf:

bash
export FRESHLYCITED_API_KEY=ipk_YOUR_KEY

Windsurf also supports OAuth for remote servers: leave out headers and it opens the FreshlyCited consent screen when the server first connects.

API keys are created under API keys in the FreshlyCited app and shown once. A key only sees its own workspace and the clients under it, with the key's role.

Check it works

Ask: "Call FreshlyCited's get_started tool." You should see your workspace, role and credit balance. If the client says it can't connect, see Authentication for what each error means.
