AI visibility tracking: how to measure citations in AI answers

AI Overview tracking means checking, on a schedule, whether Google's AI Overviews and assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot cite or mention your pages for your customers' questions. No engine gives a complete citation report, so you combine a fixed prompt set, Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and analytics data, and an index check.

AI visibility tracking matters because AI answers can only cite pages their search layer has seen, and the citations they do give change from day to day. Without a routine you're judging from screenshots.

AI visibility tracking measures whether, where and how often AI answers reference your brand and your pages, and whether that sends visitors. Four metrics cover most of it:

Metric

What it means

Why it matters

Citation

Your page appears as a linked source in the answer

The closest thing to a "ranking" in AI search; can send clicks

Mention

Your brand or product is named, with or without a link

Shapes how people see you, even without a click

Cited URL

The exact page the engine linked

Shows which pages do the work, and whether it's the current, right page

Referral visits

Sessions arriving from AI assistants

The traffic outcome, measured in your own analytics

Two derived numbers make reporting easier. Citation rate is the share of your prompts where you're cited. Share of voice is your citations as a share of all citations for those prompts, compared with competitors. Track them per engine. In Kevin Indig's May 2026 analysis of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews citations, 91% appeared in only one engine (Growth Memo), so a single blended number hides most of the story.

Build a prompt set that mirrors real customer questions

A prompt set is the fixed list of questions you run through each AI engine on every check. It's the foundation of tracking: change it constantly and you can't compare one week with the next.

A fanned deck of question cards feeding into three different answer devices

Build it in five steps:

  1. Start from real questions. Pull them from sales calls, support tickets, Search Console queries, People Also Ask boxes and community threads. Prospects ask assistants full questions ("what's the best way to…"), not keyword fragments.
  2. Cover the funnel. Mix definitions ("what is…"), comparisons ("X vs Y"), best-of lists ("best tools for…"), how-tos and pricing questions. Comparison and pricing questions tend to drive buying decisions.
  3. Include branded and non-branded prompts. Non-branded prompts show whether you're discovered at all. Branded prompts show whether engines describe you accurately.
  4. Map each prompt to a target URL. Note which of your pages should be the answer. That turns "we're not cited" into a specific page to investigate.
  5. Tag and freeze. Tag prompts by topic, intent and target page, then keep the set stable for at least a quarter. Add new prompts in batches and mark when you did.

Start with 25 to 50 prompts for one site or client. That's enough to show a trend and still small enough to review by hand.

Tracking AI Overviews in Google

Tracking AI Overviews takes two sources: Search Console for traffic, and repeated prompt checks for citations. Google doesn't offer a separate AI Overviews report. It says sites appearing in AI features are reported in Search Console's Performance report "within the 'Web' search type," alongside regular results (Google Search Central).

So in Search Console:

  • Watch impressions, clicks and CTR for the queries and pages in your prompt set. Rising impressions with falling CTR on informational queries is a common pattern when an AI Overview answers above you, but it's a hint, not proof.
  • Use URL Inspection to confirm the target page is indexed. Google says a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to be a supporting link.

For the citations themselves, run your prompts as searches and record whether an AI Overview appears, whether you're cited, and which URL. Keep the conditions consistent: a logged-out browser, the same location and the same device type. AI Overviews don't show for every query. A SIGIR 2026 study built on 11,500 queries found them on about half (51.5%) of representative real-user queries (Grossman et al.). AI Mode can be tracked the same way.

Don't rely on rankings as a proxy. Ahrefs found that 76.1% of AI Overview-cited pages ranked in the top 10 in 2025 (Ahrefs). After AI Overviews moved to Gemini 3 in January 2026, and a change in Ahrefs' parsing method, that share was 37.9% (Ahrefs). Rank and citation are related but no longer interchangeable. For what to change when you're not cited, see how to rank in AI Overviews.

Tracking ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot are tracked mainly by running your prompt set and recording the sources each answer cites. Copilot is the one engine that also gives you first-party citation data.

  • ChatGPT. Run prompts with search enabled and record the linked sources. Results vary with phrasing, conversation history and account, so use a clean session for every run. Make sure OAI-SearchBot isn't blocked. OpenAI says sites opted out of it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI). Our ChatGPT SEO guide covers what influences selection.
  • Perplexity. Perplexity shows its sources prominently, so citations are easy to record. It runs its own index, so check that PerplexityBot can reach your pages.
  • Copilot. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, a public preview since February 10, 2026, shows how often your pages are cited across Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and select partner integrations, along with a sample of "grounding queries" (Bing Webmaster Blog). It reports citations, not clicks.

Expect volatility. In a July 2026 vendor study of 1,240 sources across 132 brands, MaxAEO found that 41% of first-time citations were gone the next day and only 24% were still cited at 30 days (MaxAEO). One check is a snapshot. Run each prompt more than once per check and judge trends over weeks.

Referral traffic from AI assistants in your analytics

AI referral traffic is the share of visits that arrive from AI assistants. It's the clearest business outcome you can measure in your own analytics. In GA4, look for sessions whose source is an assistant's domain, such as:

  • chatgpt.com
  • perplexity.ai
  • copilot.microsoft.com
  • gemini.google.com

Create a custom channel group, for example "AI assistants", with a regex on session source that matches those domains, so AI visits stop hiding inside "Referral". Then compare landing pages: which pages AI users arrive on, and whether they convert.

Two caveats keep the numbers honest:

  • Not every AI visit carries a referrer. Some clicks, especially from desktop and mobile apps, can arrive without one and land in "Direct." AI referral counts are a floor, not a total.
  • AI Overview and AI Mode clicks look like Google organic. They arrive from google.com and show up in Search Console's Web data, not as a separate referrer.

Connect citations to crawl and index status

Connecting citations to crawl and index status means checking, for every prompt where you're not cited, whether the target page has been indexed in its current version before you touch the content. AI answers cite what's been crawled, and they lean toward pages that are kept current. A page the engine hasn't seen, or has only seen in last quarter's version, can't win on its merits.

Work through this order:

Symptom

Check first

Likely fix

Target page never cited

Is it indexed in Google and Bing?

Fix noindex, robots or canonical issues; get it crawled

Cited, but quoting old facts

When was the page last crawled?

Get the update re-crawled

Cited in Copilot but not Google, or the reverse

Indexed in both engines?

Close the gap on the engine that's missing it

Indexed and current, still not cited

Content and authority

Sharpen answers, add sources, earn mentions

Not cited in ChatGPT or Perplexity only

Are OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot allowed?

Update robots.txt and CDN rules

FreshlyCited doesn't track AI citations; pair it with an AI visibility tool. What it covers is the first column on the Google side: you can check crawl and index status for any list of pages or backlinks, push only the ones Google can't see, and re-check. Being indexed by Google makes a page eligible for AI Overviews and AI Mode; whether it's cited is still Google's call, based on quality, relevance and authority. For verified sites, the same pages also go to Bing through IndexNow (an open "this page changed" notice that Bing accepts), free. ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants use their own crawlers and search partners. We don't submit to them, and we don't claim to, so for those engines the robots.txt row is the part you control.

A weekly AI visibility routine

A weekly routine keeps tracking cheap and turns it into decisions. This one fits in an hour for a single site:

A seven-segment weekly routine dial with a gold needle and small check, page and chart icons
  1. Monday: run the prompt set. Use your tool or manual checks across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. Record cited, mentioned, cited URL and competitors cited.
  2. Review first-party data. Check Search Console for the mapped queries and pages, Bing's AI Performance report, and GA4's AI assistants channel.
  3. Flag the gaps. List prompts where you lost a citation, or never had one, and note the target page for each.
  4. Check index status of flagged pages. Confirm each one is indexed and current. Push anything Google can't see, then re-check later in the week.
  5. Pick one content fix. Choose one flagged page that is indexed and current, and improve the passage that should answer the prompt.
  6. Log changes. Record what you changed and when, so next week's movement can be read against it.
  7. Report monthly. Roll the weekly data into a monthly trend per engine. Agencies can attach link-by-link index status to report results to clients.

Keep your expectations realistic. Google says optimizing for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO" (Google). Tracking tells you where you stand; it doesn't move the numbers by itself.

Choosing an AI visibility tool

An AI visibility tool automates your prompt runs and stores the history, so the main questions are which engines it covers, how it samples and what it lets you export. Before you buy, ask:

  • Engine coverage. Does it cover Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini, and does it report each separately?
  • Sampling. How many runs per prompt per check, from which locations, and logged in or out? Single runs overstate volatility.
  • Citations vs mentions. Does it separate linked citations from unlinked brand mentions, and record the exact cited URL?
  • Competitors. Can you see who is cited instead of you?
  • Custom prompts and tags. Can you import your own prompt set, tag it by intent and target page, and keep it stable?
  • Exports and API. Can you get raw data out for client reports or your own dashboards?
  • Price per prompt. Costs scale with prompts × engines × frequency. Model that before committing.

Be wary of any tool that promises to "get you cited." Tracking measures; it can't guarantee placement, and no one outside the engines controls selection. Our roundup of the best AI visibility tools compares the options, and the AI search optimization guide covers what to do with the data.

Whichever tool you choose, start every investigation at the crawl. FreshlyCited's smart push checks which of your pages and links Google has indexed, pushes only the invisible ones and shows the before and after. Check your own links free.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Does Search Console show AI Overview traffic?

Not as a separate report. As of October 2026, Google says sites appearing in AI features are counted in Search Console's Performance report within the "Web" search type, alongside regular results. Most teams pair it with prompt tracking.

Why do AI citations change day to day?

Generative answers vary by wording, location and time, so a single check is a snapshot. Track the same prompts on a schedule and watch the trend.

Does FreshlyCited track AI citations?

No. FreshlyCited covers the step before: whether Google has seen your pages and links. Pair it with an AI visibility tool, and if a page isn't cited, first check that its current version has been crawled and indexed.
