Search Console is where you see which of your Wix pages Google has indexed (added to the library that search results and its AI answers draw on) and why others aren't. This how-to covers requirements, both Wix routes with menu paths from Wix's help center as of October 2026, a DNS option for a Domain property, submitting the sitemap, and the verification failures Wix lists.
Before you start
You need a Premium plan, a connected domain, a published site and an indexable homepage before you can verify a Wix site. Wix's manual guide says "To connect to Google Search Console, you must have an upgraded site and a connected domain" (Wix Help Center); the domain can be bought from Wix or from another host.
Requirement | Why | Where to check in Wix |
|---|---|---|
Premium plan and connected domain | Both Wix routes require them | Your plan and Domains pages |
Site published | Wix says "Search engines can only index pages that you have published" | Publish in the editor |
Site indexable | Wix says it's "important to let search engines index your site if you want to verify your site" | SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → SEO Settings → Let search engines index your site |
Homepage not password-protected or members-only | Search engine bots "won't be able to crawl and index it" | The homepage's permissions |
Owner or admin role | Wix says only "site owners and admin collaborators can access SEO Setup Checklist" | Roles and permissions |
Then pick a route:
| SEO Setup Checklist | Site Verification tool (meta tag) | DNS TXT record |
|---|---|---|---|
Search Console property | Created for you | URL-prefix | Domain |
Sitemap | Submitted automatically | You submit it | You submit it |
Can repeat it | No: "It is not possible to verify your site using SEO Setup Checklist more than once" | Yes | Yes |
Suits | A first, simple setup | Re-verifying, or adding other people | Covering every subdomain and protocol |
Wix's two articles also note that if you verified one way, you can ignore the other: "When you manually verify your site with Google, you don't need to connect your site in your SEO Setup Checklist."
How do you connect Wix with the SEO Setup Checklist?
You connect with the checklist by completing its first step and clicking Connect to Google. Wix's steps as of October 2026 (Wix Help Center):
- Go to the SEO Setup Checklist in your site's SEO dashboard.
- Complete the checklist in Step 1.
- Click Connect to Google.
- Sign in with the Google account you want to own the property, and click Allow on the permissions pop-up.
What happens next, from Wix's own articles:
- The sitemap goes in for you. "Wix automatically submits your sitemap to Google," and "There's no need to submit your sitemap to Google again" after changes (Wix Help Center).
- The tag is locked. In the Site Verification tool, "If you previously verified your site with Google using the SEO Setup Checklist, you won't be able to delete your verification meta tag."
- It's one-time. To verify again, for example under a different Google account, Wix says "you must do it manually."
How do you verify Wix with Google's meta tag?
You verify manually by creating a URL-prefix property in Search Console, copying its HTML tag, and saving it in Wix's Site Verification tool. Wix's steps as of October 2026 (Wix Help Center):
In Google Search Console
- Click Start now.
- Select URL Prefix and enter your full URL, for example
https://www.example.com. Wix stresses verifying "the full site URL, including the https://www." - Click Continue, expand HTML tag, and copy the meta tag. Leave the tab open.
In Wix
- In a new tab, go to SEO & GEO in your site's dashboard.
- Scroll down to Tools and settings and select Site Verification.
- Click Google Search Console to expand it, enter the meta tag, and click Save.
Back in Search Console
- Click Verify.
The tag you paste is one line in this format (your content value will differ):
<meta name="google-site-verification" content="your-verification-string" />Wix adds it to your homepage's header code, and "The tag will work when the site is published." Keep it there: Wix warns that search engines "periodically check if the verification meta tag is still in your homepage's header," and removing it "may mean you lose your verification" (Wix Help Center). The same tool takes Bing's tag, so you can verify Bing Webmaster Tools the same way, or import the site from Search Console.
Can you verify a Wix site with a Domain property?
Yes, if you control the domain's DNS: a Domain property is verified with a TXT record, which Wix lets you add for domains it manages. Google says a Domain property "requires you to verify ownership using DNS record verification" (Search Console Help), and covers every subdomain and protocol.
- In Search Console, add a Domain property with the root domain only, for example
example.com. - Copy the TXT value, which starts
google-site-verification=. - In your Wix account, go to Domains, click the Domain Actions icon next to the domain, and select Manage DNS Records.
- Click + Add Record in the TXT section. Leave Host Name blank if you were told to use
@, paste the value, and click Save (Wix Help Center). - Return to Search Console and click Verify.
If your domain is connected to Wix by pointing, Wix says "you must add or update TXT records with your domain host (not Wix)." Google adds: "To stay verified, don't remove the DNS record from your provider, even after verification succeeds" (Search Console Help). Wix doesn't support the HTML file method, because for a root-level .txt file Wix says "it's currently not possible to add this kind of file to your Wix site" (Wix Help Center).
How do you submit the Wix sitemap yourself?
If you verified with the meta tag or DNS, submit the sitemap in Search Console's Sitemaps report. Wix's steps: go to Google Search Console, select your site, select Sitemaps, enter sitemap.xml under Add a new sitemap, and click Submit (Wix Help Center).
Submit the index, sitemap.xml, not the children. Wix's index links one sitemap per page type, such as pages-sitemap.xml and store-products-sitemap.xml; our Wix sitemap and indexing guide lists them and shows a live example. Google says "You must have owner permissions on a property to submit a sitemap using the Sitemaps report" (Sitemaps report help).
If the site still has no pages in Google once it's verified, check which Wix pages Google has indexed before you change more settings.
Why does Wix verification fail?
Wix verification usually fails because of the account, plan or page settings rather than the tag itself. This table combines the causes in Wix's two troubleshooting articles (connecting errors, manual verification) with the tag rules in its Site Verification article:
Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
Signed in with the wrong Google account | Log out of all Google accounts and sign in with the right one |
A | Wix says your university "may block access to certain services"; change your Wix account email |
No Premium plan or no connected domain | Upgrade and connect a domain first |
Homepage password-protected or members-only | Remove the protection, then verify |
More than 1,000 properties in Search Console | Remove some properties, submit the sitemap manually, then reconnect |
Connect to Google pop-up won't open | Allow it in your ad blocker, enable third-party cookies, or try another browser |
Permissions pop-up not accepted | Click Allow when it appears |
"Wix has lost connection to Google Search Console" | Click Reconnect Now, for example after a Google password change |
Tag rejected | Paste the whole tag in the format |
Property URL doesn't match | Re-add the property with the exact |
How do you check it worked?
Check that Search Console accepted the verification, that the sitemap reads, and that your homepage is indexed.
- Sitemaps report:
sitemap.xmlshould show Success, which Google defines as "The sitemap was fetched and read without any errors" (Sitemaps report help). - URL Inspection: inspect your homepage and one key page. If a page shows a status such as crawled - currently not indexed, the page itself is the issue, not verification. The Page indexing report guide explains every status.
- Patience: Google says crawling "can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks" (Ask Google to recrawl).
To track many Wix pages at once, FreshlyCited checks which ones Google has indexed, pushes only the invisible ones and re-checks them on days 1, 3 and 7. An index credit is used only if the link is indexed; if it's still not indexed after the day-7 re-check, the credit comes back (exclusions apply, such as pages that return an error or carry noindex). Google still decides what it indexes.
